Cr Suzy Batkovic:
Townsville City Council is distributing 1,110 native trees, along with 123m³ of mulch, which is fantastic.
Ranger Dan Bamblett:
Events like Tree Day are very important, and getting kids out and thinking about planting trees and restocking the environment is a super important practice because of all of the things that our wildlife are facing here in Australia habitat loss and destruction is the main one.
Cr Suzy Batkovic:
The benefits that these trees have for our city are just incredible and so the next generation to continue to learn and make sure that we continue to plan is just something that Townsville needs.
Amia and Sophie:
We're going to plant them around the front of the school. We'll have more spaces to sit at lunchtime in the shade.
Ranger Dan Bamblett:
Every conservation effort is a long game there's no short game in conservation.
The trees need to be 40/50 years old before they're able to provide hollows for things like owls and possums.
So, you know, getting kids involved at this age, they will hopefully be able to see all of their labor come to fruition when they're adults and maybe even show their own kids the trees they planted.
But we really need to plant that seed pun intended. That conservation is a very long term effort. It's not just a day you can do and then just walk off and say, you've done your thing. We've really got to continually work at it.
