About the Artwork
The overarching concept of my documentary portraiture work centres around finding the weird or unusual in our everyday life. This work captures the moment after my daughter chose a new goldfish for her tank at home. She named it Magpie because of its black-and-white markings. Unfortunately, Magpie was only with us for a few days before she passed away.
About the Artist
Emma Perry is a Melbourne-based photographic artist. Her work is fun-loving, candid, and sometimes experimental in a genre that generally favours realism. Most of her work centres on still lifes, signage, and landscapes. As such, many of her shots are devoid of people, although their presence is usually felt through the human-made objects they’ve left behind.
Emma has been a finalist in some of Australia’s most prestigious photography awards and exhibitions, including the Moran Prize, Head On Photography Festival, and the Olive Cotton Award, among others. Emma has exhibited widely, with selected venues including the International Centre for Photography in New York, the Photographic Centre Northwest in Seattle, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. In 2021, she won the Landscape category in the Australian Photography Awards.
