John McPhee

John McPhee worked in Australian art museums for 25 years, among them the National Gallery of Australia (1980–92), and the National Gallery of Victoria (1992–96). In 1997, he established a private art consultancy in Sydney, working with public galleries to develop policy and strategic plans and assisting in the curatorship of private and corporate collections.

He has authored books on colonial painters John Glover and Joseph Lycett, Red Cedar in Australia, and The Painted Portrait Photograph in Tasmania 1850–1900, respectively. His other publications include books about Australian art, decorative art, and folk and popular arts, as well as numerous articles in magazines and journals. As an art critic, he specialises in writing about contemporary art, the decorative arts, design, and museum exhibitions.
