Events and Programs

Let’s get active! Council provides a range of events, programs and initiatives to help you get active, and stay active. We are also extremely lucky to have a huge range of outdoor spaces and places to walk, run, cycle or play in.

North Queensland Sportstar Awards

Have you, or do you know someone who has achieved great things as an athlete or has made a significant contribution to North Queensland sport? Nominations are now open for the 2018 Queensland Country Credit Union North Queensland Sportstar Awards.

The below categories are open, closing Friday 14 September. Click on the category to nominate and send your completed form to

Achievements are for the period between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. This does not include the Service to North Queensland Sport which may relate to involvement over a longer period of time.

30 ways 30 days30 Ways in 30 Days

30 days…30 different activities….all of them Free! Throughout the month of April, council showcases events and amazing parks, and also partners with our Get Active Townsville providers and local sport and recreation clubs to provide a free activity every day. The free activities include Jungle Body, Aquafit, Cardio Tennis, Yoga, Kendo, New Mum’s Fitness, council run activities including a free swim day at our public pools, Nature Play and the major event of the month, Ride to Riverway.

Ride to RiverwayRide to Riverway

Held in April each year and the highlight of the 30 Way in 30 Days calendar. We encourage active travel to this event so ride from home or start a little closer (perhaps along part of the Ross River circuit), or simply come straight to Riverway. Enjoy your ride and arrive at Raintree Grove at Riverway and check out the great activities on offer like the bling your bike station, QLD Police bike engraving, bike safety checks and bicycle maintenance station. Get Active ExpoGet Active Expo

Held at the beginning of each year, the expo involves over 100 sport, recreation, health and fitness organisations. Find out about active and healthy opportunities in Townsville, sign on to a new sports club, take advantage of special event deals and even have a go in the active demonstration or active zone areas. Classes and ActivitiesClasses and Activities

We know there are sometimes barriers stopping us from getting out and being active so we promote low cost activities that encourage community involvement. Sessions currently include anything from Tai Chi and Yoga, to Cardio Tennis and your local Parkrun. There are over 40 different activities each week. Nature Play QLDNature Play QLD Logo

Council collaborates with partner groups to facilitate Nature Play events across Townsville. Nature Play aims to increase the time Queensland kids spend in unstructured play outdoors and in nature. It promotes health benefits, including cognitive, social and emotional development, and it builds resilience and creativity as well. Outdoor Facilities

Council has a range of outdoor facilities available for outdoor exercise equipment, skateboarding, basketball, hopscotch and BMX in numerous locations.  The facilities are for all members of the community to share and utilise in a safe and responsible way.

Heart Foundation WalkingHeart Foundation Walking

Did you know Townsville City Council is a host organisation for Australia’s largest free community-based walking network? Heart Foundation Walking makes regular physical activity enjoyable and easy. The walking groups come in many different sizes and various times, distances, days and levels of difficulty. If you do not live near a group or prefer to walk on your own, you can join as a ‘Virtual Walker’ and track your progress.

Get Active Grants Program

Support is available to assist Townsville sports people to achieve excellence in their chosen sport by providing funding to attend National and International sporting competitions held outside of Townsville.
