It’ll be a big call and all in good fun when Cr Tony Parsons makes a cameo broadcasting appearance for the City Council Mayor’s Trophy at the Townsville greyhounds next Tuesday.

Cr Parsons, once the voice of greyhound racing in the city, will make a one-off return to the binoculars after 15 years to call the feature race at next week’s big free family night.

Mayor Cr Jenny Hill will also be in attendance to present the Mayor’s Trophy to winning connections and Santa will make a special appearance for the kids.

"I’m really looking forward to it, and supporting a great night," Cr Parsons said.

"The last time I called a race at the Townsville showgrounds was in about 2000 after seven years as the club caller.

"I was thrilled the club asked me to come along and call the cup and it’ll be a lot of fun.

"Greyhound races are very fast so I’ll need to be on my toes."

Townsville City Council is supporting the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club’s staging of the meeting which offers free entry and a number of activities and attractions for the whole family.

Club promotions officer John Barrow said the Mayor’s Trophy was a time honoured race on the annual calendar.

"The council has had a long association with the club in staging the cup meeting and we’re looking forward to a big night," Mr Barrow said.

"The Mayor’s Trophy meeting is a big night, and I’d encourage families to come along and enjoy the racing and the free activities."

The night will include a visit by Santa Claus, free lollies and ice blocks, face painting, and jumping castle. Gates open at 6.30pm.
