Author Andy Jones to launch Summer Reading Club

Date published: 13 November 2015

Best-selling children’s author and entertainer Andy Jones will join school students from across Townsville next week to encourage more children to read.

Mr Jones’s visit is for the launch of the annual Summer Reading Club, a free online and in-library holiday reading program run in partnership with State Library of Queensland and the Australian Library and Information Association.

Community and Culture Committee chair Cr Sue Blom said the national program saw 41,589 children register in 2014, who collectively read more than 265,000 books.

"We’re excited to have Andy Jones join us to promote the benefits of reading and library membership to a young audience," Cr Blom said.

The theme of the 2015/16 Summer Reading Club is Lost Worlds – underwater worlds, alternative universes, epic adventures, mythical creatures and discovery.

Children who register receive a free pack and prizes for every five books they read.

Registration is via council’s website www.townsville.qld.gov.au or at CityLibraries Townsville.

Registrations open December 1 and end January 27.

The Summer Reading Club is proudly supported in Townsville by Bluewattle.

CityLibraries Townsville will host a range of children’s activities during the school holidays.
