Flinders St reopens as CBD utilities project moves along

The Flinders Street-Stanley Street intersection has reopened to two-way traffic on schedule as work on an upgrade of underground utilities progresses in the CBD.

Work will now move on to Stage 2 of the upgrade further along the northern side of Stanley Street up to the corner of Sturt Street where limited traffic access will be in place.

Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairman Cr Ray Gartrell said traffic in Flinders Street was again flowing in both directions after Stage 1 was finished on time in two weeks.

"The council and the contractor are highly conscious of the need to complete the works on schedule and it’s good news that the first stage is finished and Flinders Street is back in action," Cr Gartrell said.

Limited traffic access will remain in place along the northern side of Stanley Street as the work continues and motorists are asked to observe traffic controls.

Footpaths are unaffected by the work.

The project is part of the Townville City Council’s $43 million CBD Utilities Upgrade and this portion of the works is being carried out by the Lancini Group in conjunction with stormwater diversionary works associated with their new Woolworths development in Sturt St.
