The NQ Toyota Cowboys grand final victory was the greatest sporting moment in the North's history, Townsville Mayor Cr Jenny Hill told thousands of fans at the city's reception for the team at 1300SMILES Stadium today.

Cr Hill presented the keys to the city to the Cowboys on behalf of the community at today's event.

"It's a good thing it's a holiday today, because I doubt many people would have turned up for work after the celebrations last night," Cr Hill said.

"This grand final victory is without doubt North Queensland's greatest sporting moment and it has done wonders to lift the spirits of the city and the region in what has been a very tough time for everyone.

"We couldn't be prouder of coach Paul Green, JT and Matt Scott and the players.

"This is rugby league country and they will walk like gods among their loyal fans who have been waiting 20 years to win the grand final. But even non footy fans have been caught up in the euphoria."

Cr Hill said the Cowboys colours would fly proudly in Brisbane after she won a bet with Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

"They asked for a flag and with the Cowboys help we sent them a 1000 square foot flag (12m x 8m) to fly," Cr Hill said.,

"I'd love to see it hanging from the Storey Bridge, or a prominent building in the CBD.

"It will be a fantastic sight to behold."
