Call for Townsville artist to revitalise wall

Pedestrians and motorists along Ogden St in the CBD will soon be treated to a new piece of street art thanks to a partnership between Townsville City Council and Angus Smith Sportspower.

Expressions of interest have gone out to find a Townsville-based street artist to complete a mural on the rear facade of the sports store.

This landmark project will see the successful artist create a contemporary street or aerosol design with a sports theme, on an outdoor canvas.

Council’s Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the project would help create a vibrant and lively city centre, enhancing Ogden St as a must-see destination for street art in Townsville.

“Angus Smith Sportspower had previously commissioned a street art mural on their rear façade, however over the years the work has aged and now is the time to revitalise it,” Cr Doyle said.

“This is an exciting opportunity for local street artists to build on the emerging, vibrant street art scene in Townsville’s CBD such as the previous commission created by world-renowned Belgian street artist ROA.”

Ben Smith of Angus Smith Sportspower said he looked forward to the submissions from local artists.

“We have a lot of creative people in Townsville so I can’t wait to see some of the ideas and designs that are put forward to breathe new life into the back of our building,” he said.

The commission is part of the Street Art Activation Framework which sees council working with the arts community to put Townsville on the map as the arts capital of northern Australia.

Expressions of interest are open until May 13. For more information contact the public art officer on 4727 9011 or email ptrg@townsville.qld.gov.au
