Exciting Strand Waterpark renewal to start after holidays

Date published: 7 April 2016

The Strand’s star attraction, the ever popular Waterpark, is set for a complete redevelopment as soon as school goes back after the Easter holidays.

Townsville City Council’s contractors are scheduled to move on site and start work on April 11.

The $2.8 million project will fully renew the Waterpark after almost 17 years of operation and more than a million visitors.

Work will include the complete staged replacement of all equipment and softfall as well as an upgrade to surrounding landscaping.

And the park will boast a new big bucket to replace the current version which has thrilled families with around 1.5 million tips since the redeveloped Strand opened in 1999.

Townsville Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said the renewed Waterpark would be back bigger and better.

“The new water park will feature ideas based on the feedback from residents and I’m sure it will be as popular as ever when it reopens towards the end of the year,” Cr Hill said.

“A big part of the new design will be the additional slides and a dedicated toddler play area.

“The Strand is a wonderful asset for the city and great facilities like the water park are a big reason why families enjoy it so much.

“It’s important to renew facilities when they’ve reached the end of their tether, and the new park will provide a safe and exciting attraction for residents and visitors for years to come.”

The project will be completed in three stages, with the first phase, the removal of the old equipment and installation of the new structure.

Facilities will include new slides, a full range of new water play equipment, soft fall, landscaping, shade structures, lighting and formalised seating.

The Rockpool, other playgrounds and patrolled beaches on the Strand, as well as Riverway Lagoons, Kokoda Swimming Pool or Northern Beaches Leisure Centre will provide families with good recreational options until the new waterpark reopens.
