Movies and fireworks to bring in the New Year

Date published: 28 December 2016

Free movies and fireworks will headline Townsville’s New Year celebrations.

The night will kick off at 6.30pm at Strand Park and Riverway with the screening of the animated family flick UP at 7.15pm.

A second film - Zootopia - will be screened at Strand Park only at 9.15pm.

A spectacular fireworks display has also been planned for both locations as well as at Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island at 9pm and again at the Strand at midnight.

Deputy Mayor Cr Les Walker invited the community to join the celebrations.

“We’ve organised a great night for all the family to welcome in the New Year,” Cr Walker said.

“A highlight of this year’s event will be the ceremonial sealing of the T150 Time Capsule, which will be done at Strand Park.

“This will wrap up the city’s amazing 150th birthday celebrations which have seen a year packed with events and programs galore.”

Cr Walker said a crowd of about 8,000 people was expected to join in the fun across the two locations.

The Riverway event will also include markets and amusements from 6.30-9.30pm.

“Council’s New Year’s Eve program is a great option for families looking to celebrate the end of 2016,” Cr Walker said.
