Council offers free art workshops for school holidays

Townsville City Council is inviting families to visit the city's galleries these school holidays for creative and fun art workshops.

Free workshops this will celebrate sculpture by creating artworks with the help of local artists including Strand Ephemera 2015 winner Allison McDonald.

The workshops are being held in the lead up to International Sculpture Day on Sunday, April 23 when the gallery will open for free art making activities for families from 10am-12pm.

Next week the gallery will hold workshops with an Easter theme at Pinnacles Gallery, Riverway.

Make your own basket on Tuesday, April 11, decorate eggs on Wednesday, April 12 and create an adorable baby chick on Thursday, April 13.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the galleries always offered fantastic programs for children, especially in the school holidays.

“Bring your children or grandchildren into the galleries and let them get creative in a supportive environment,” Cr Doyle said.

“We have an amazing array of programs on offer through our galleries all year round, so come in and find out what suits you.

“While visiting Perc Tucker Gallery, you can view the two exhibitions that are currently still on display; Awesome Achievers: Stories from Australians of the Year and Resolution: New Indigenous Photomedia.

“At Pinnacles we still have Remember Me: The lost diggers of Vignacourt on display until April 30.”

Gallery Services are also offering free drop-in art activities at Willows Shopping Centre these school holidays.

Materials for the workshops are provided, however children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
