Magnetic Island’s Waste Transfer Station has won a national excellence award.

The facility was recognised as the winner in the Transfer Stations Excellence category at this year’s 2017 Australian Landfill and Transfer Stations Conference Awards dinner in Rosehill Gardens, New South Wales.

Run by the Waste Management Association of Australia, the awards showcase the best that landfills and transfer stations have to offer, with the aim of applauding sites that are exceptional and encourage best practice operations.

A total of 22 nominations from across the country were received over three categories:

  • Landfill Excellence Award
  • Transfer Stations Excellence Award
  • Innovation Award

Townsville City Council’s Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Paul Jacob said council was honoured to receive the award.

“We worked closely with Magnetic Island residents to deliver this fantastic facility that transfers waste off the island, therefore conserving the island and its natural environment, while also taking care of residents’ waste needs,” Cr Jacob said.

“Council has invested heavily in the island’s waste management and this facility, which opened late 2015, will ensure waste needs are taken care of well into the future.

“It’s fantastic that our world class facility has been recognised nationally.”
