Townsville2020 – A Clear Vision for our City

Date published: 7 December 2017

The Townsville 2020 masterplan provides a clear vision for our city.

Townsville 2020 focuses on creating world-class experiences for locals and tourists and re-imagining some of our most-loved public spaces such as The Strand and Castle Hill.

It proves a framework for the new masterplan to build on the strategic recommendation included in the Pure Projects review.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Townsville 2020 would be the most transformative masterplan in the city’s history.

“Today, we are launching Townsville 2020 – which provides a clear vision for our city and a roadmap for what can be achieved here,” Cr Hill said.

“Townsville 2020 is a well-articulated plan that gives the private sector the confidence to invest in Townsville.

“Let me be very clear, Townsville 2020 is not just another plan – it’s about delivery.

“We want projects completed or well underway by 2020.”

As part of the new framework underpinning Townsville 2020, Pure Projects has been appointed to the role of City Placemaker/Masterplanner.

Cr Hill said the new City Placemaker/Masterplanner will play a key role in ensuring future developments align with the Townsville 2020 vision.

“The new City Placemaker will ensure future developments and projects – whether they be public or privately-funded – are consistent with the vision we have for our city,” Cr Hill said.

Cr Hill said creating world-class experiences in Townsville will better engage our city’s millennials and help increase the number of tourists visiting our city.

“Townsville has a unique character and we don’t want to change that – we want to enhance and celebrate it,” Cr Hill said.

“We want to position the city as an international tourism destination – not just a major regional centre in the North.

“Townsville 2020 is the plan and the roadmap to achieve that.”

The first Townsville 2020 projects announced today include:

  • New City Placemaker/Masterplanner for Townsville – Pure Projects
  • New Entry Statements – Place Design
  • Castle Hill Activation – Counterpoint Architecture, in conjunction with Milford Planning
