Heatley family fun day to build community spirit

A free family event will be held at Heatley Park this Friday to coincide with Queensland Mental Health Week 2017.

Townsville City Council, Townsville Youth Council and a group of organisations are supporting the event on Friday, October 13.

Free interactive activities for the entire family will include jumping castle, face painting, rock climbing wall, laser skirmish, craft, music and the screening of the Dreamworks family flick Trolls at 6.30pm.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase however families are invited to bring a blanket, chairs and a picnic.

Local councillor Kurt Rehbein said the event was an opportunity to build a sense of belonging.

“Movie nights are one of the things that the local community has been asking for and it’s wonderful that this free event is back for a second year,” Cr Rehbein said.

“I think this is a great way to get to know your neighbours, a way to establish networks within the community and have a relaxing night out with family and friends.

“The committee and Townsville Youth Council have done a wonderful job in bringing this event back bigger and better this year.

“It’s also fantastic that a number of community organisations have come together to promote positive mental health for us all.”

Representatives of the Mental Health Week steering committee said they were pleased to see so many groups becoming involved and working together to make this year’s event even bigger than last year.

All stallholders have developed fun, interactive and engaging activities that promote positive mental health.

Representative of Townsville Youth Council Jessica Ward said as youth and members of the Townsville community it was vital to understand the importance of talking about mental health and promoting mental wellness.

“We need to work together to break the stigma around mental health issues,” Ms Ward said.

“We believe creating awareness and education we can help the youth as well as the wider community on one of the most prominent issued faced within society today.”

The event will run from 4pm-8.30pm at Heatley Park next to the Long Tan Memorial Pool.

The movie will be shown on the big screen from 6.30pm.

There is also a chance to win an iPad thanks to Townsville Youth Council.
