Townsville ready to kickoff Rugby League World Cup

Townsville will cement its position as the premier sporting city in North Queensland when it hosts the first of three rugby league world cup games this Saturday.

Mayor Jenny Hill called on locals to adopt a team for their games in Townsville and generate a bit of rivalry amongst locals.

“The USA, Fiji, Wales and Italy will all play in Townsville over the next fortnight so if you have any ancestry or favour any of these nations then get out to the stadium and support them,” Cr Hill said.

“Townsville and North Queensland love their rugby league and I’m sure plenty will get out to the stadium, so whether it is where your grandparents were born or the flip of a coin, get behind a team and cheer them on.

“The world cup won’t just be big for rugby league fans, it will also provide a boost for the hotel and hospitality sectors as it will bring more visitors in to the city.

“The next few months especially are going to be good for jobs in these sectors during the world cup and in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.

Games played in Townsville are:

  • 28 October – Fiji vs USA: kickoff at 7:40pm

Double-header

  • 5 November – Italy vs USA: kickoff at 4pm
  • 5 November – Fiji vs Wales: kickoff at 6:30pm

The rugby league world cup is held every four years and this year features 14 teams from around the world.
