Council crew member selected to be part of the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill has congratulated Public Affairs team member Catherine McHugh on being selected for international exchange at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Ms McHugh is the recipient of the Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) official exchange program and will volunteer as a racing trackside official at Singapore Grand Prix in September.
Cr Hill said Council staff have diverse talents and are passionate about volunteering in the local community.
“I am proud that Council employs the best and brightest staff and I encourage them to achieve above and beyond,” Cr Hill said.
“It’s always great to have Council employees recognised for their dedication and hard work, and Ms McHugh being named as an Ambassador for Women in Australian Motorsport is an amazing achievement.”
Cr Hill said volunteers are crucial to ensure major events can be held in our city, which provide a big uplift for local businesses.
“Council invests in major events such as the Supercars because they boost the economy and create jobs for locals, and we couldn’t do it without the help of our volunteers,” Cr Hill said.
Ms McHugh has been volunteering in Motor Sport since 2008 and has been a part of the Townsville Supercars since the inaugural event in 2009.
Ms McHugh said she is passionate about encouraging anyone in regional areas to become involved in Motor Sport.
“Living in regional areas means that I’m aware of the lack of opportunities to participate in high profile events, particularly for women,” Ms McHugh said.
“I want to support our local Motor Sport events and show other officials that it is possible to make it to those major ticket events.
“I’m really looking forward to gaining experience at such a prestigious event and bringing it back to share with other officials at a local, state and national level.”
The WAMS exchange program is now in its sixth year and is designed to promote and encourage the participation of female motor sports officials in Australia and Singapore.
