Townsville City Council has put on their blue suede shoes as part of the 2018 Seniors Week celebrations which commenced with the Seniors Lifestyle Expo earlier this week and concludes with the Seniors Luncheon and Awards over the next two days.

The Seniors Lifestyle Expo kicked off celebrations at Townsville Stadium on Tuesday 21 August with more than 3,000 residents attending. The free event featured more than 100 local and regional exhibitors with information, activities and giveaways specifically tailored to seniors.

Amongst the exhibitors were healthcare and service providers, community groups and recreational and entertainment options.

Townsville Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said Seniors Week presents the chance to come together to celebrate the valuable contributions older people give to the Townsville community.

“The Lifestyle Expo is a great opportunity to educate our senior residents on the products and services available to them throughout the community,” said Cr Hill.

Seniors week celebrations continue today with the Luncheon and Awards ceremony held from 10.30am-1.30pm for residents over the age of 60.

The theme of this year’s luncheon is Las Vegas, with guests encouraged to come dressed in their best Vegas themed wear.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the expo and luncheon were fun and educational opportunities for the seniors in our community.

“Council is pleased to facilitate these important events that recognise the role that seniors play in our community,” Cr Doyle said.

“The Seniors Luncheon and Awards are a way for us to acknowledge the important contributions of our senior residents.”

A free bus will run from Stockland to the stadium at 9:30am, 10:30am and 11:30am.
