Townsville City Council’s Public Affairs team has been recognised as Australia’s best Government In-House PR Team of the Year – proving our local talent is up there with the best of the country.

The team won the award at the Public Relations Institute of Australia’s (PRIA) Golden Target Awards this week, and was further recognised with a highly commended in the Best Small Budget Campaign category.

Council nominated its Litter-ally Improving Waste campaign, which aimed to explain changes to waste policies – including the introduction of a free hard waste kerbside collection, two free dumping weekends per year and implementing free dumping for green waste and recyclables – while using only Council staff and resources.

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle – who traveled to Sydney to receive the award – said she was proud of the talented employees at Council.

“Townsville has a lot of creative talent – it’s wonderful that it’s reflected in Council’s Public Affairs team and the Townsville Waste crew,” Cr Doyle said.

“This campaign was a collaboration between two teams and it really demonstrates what Council can do for the community using our own resources.

“Council is focused on customer experience and we’ve been exploring how we can communicate effectively with the community – humour has been a great tool to get these important messages out.

“It’s fantastic that Council was recognised – not only on a state level – but on a national stage for our talent and efforts.”
