Townsville City Council has approved a $50 million luxury apartment development that will create 400 direct and indirect jobs.

The Mariners Residences project – off The Strand – includes 11 townhouses and 16 apartments.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the development would provide a major boost to the construction industry.

“The Mariners Residences project will create 400 direct and indirect jobs and that will flow through our economy to provide a real boost,” Cr Hill.

“This development will enhance the area around Mariners Drive and The Strand – one of Townsville’s most iconic views.

“Recently, there’s been renewed confidence in our economy and projects like this build momentum to attract further investment to our city.”

Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the project showed growing confidence in our city and economy.

“There is a growing interest from investors and businesses looking at opportunities here in Townsville,” Cr Walker said.

“Our Townsville 2020 masterplan – which provides a clear vision for our city – will give confidence to the private sector to invest and create jobs for locals.

“There’s a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline for Townsville and the signs of economic recover continue to get stronger.”

Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project would be an excellent addition to the area.

“This development will enhance the area around Mariners Drive and The Strand – one of Townsville’s most iconic views,” Cr Greaney said. The development received two approvals, one being code assessable and the other impact assessable – but as no public submissions were received, both applications were approved by Council Planning staff.
