Townsville City Council will give away hundreds of free water-efficient sprinklers will be available at the Rowes Bay Open House Day on Sunday to help locals to become more waterwise and sustainable.

Mayor Jenny Hill said it was important residents continued their efforts to conserve water over coming months.

“Townsville residents did a great job of sticking to water usage targets during the drought, which was the worst in a generation,” Cr Hill said.

“We need everybody to keep using water wisely because our daily consumption has been creeping up in recent weeks.

“It’s important that everyone does their part to conserve water until the new pipeline is built by the end of 2019 – which will provide our community long-term water security.”

Cr Hill said the Open House Day provides the opportunity for local residents to talk one-on-one with experts about everything from water saving tips to reducing energy costs.

“The hot weather has made lawns and plants thirsty and that’s why experts will be on hand to provide expert tips at keeping your garden green in our climate,” Cr Hill said.

Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said making even the smallest changes can have a big impact on energy and water efficiency.

“The Rowes Bay Open House Day gives Townsville residents the opportunity to get expert advice how to be more sustainable and save money,” Cr Greaney said.

“Experts will provide their best tips to beat the rising cost of energy and cut your power bills while also helping the environment.”

Cr Greaney said there will be plenty of family friendly activities on the day.

“It is a great family event with heaps to do – we have an interactive kids corner, a wetland tour and drinks and wood fired pizzas will be available,” Cr Greaney said.

There will also be a native plant giveaway on the day.

The event will be held at the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre, 56 Cape Pallarenda Rd on Sunday from 9am to 1pm.
