Artists invited to enter The Percivals 2020

Date published: 2 December 2019

Entries are now open for The Percivals 2020.

The prestigious visual arts competition has more than $50,000 of prize money across three categories: the Percival Portrait Painting Prize, the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize and the Percival Animal Portrait Prize.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the biennial event carried one of the country’s largest art competition prizes.

“The calibre of works submitted into The Percivals is always of a national standard,” Cr Hill said.

“The Percivals began in 2007 as a local competition but is now a major art exhibition which draws in hundreds of entries.

“We’re expecting outstanding work from not just Townsville artists, but also artists from across the country and overseas.”

Cr Hill said The Percivals exhibitions were always highly anticipated by locals and visitors to the city.

“Perc Tucker Regional Gallery has a huge number of attendees through its doors to see the incredible ways artists create their portraits,” she said.

“The judges always have a tough job on their hands to decide on the winners, and I’m sure the 2020 entries will be as competitive as ever.”

Last year’s winner of the $40,000 Percival Portrait Painting Prize was Victorian artist Jenny Rodgerson for her self-portrait Balancing in the big red coat.

Townsville City Council Galleries received over 300 entries for the Percival Portrait Painting Prize 2018 exhibition, with 104 finalists making it to be displayed at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.
