But wait, there’s myrrh: Free parking rolls out in Townsville

Townsville City Council is giving happy shoppers a very merry reason to head to the CBD to complete their Christmas to-do lists this festive season.

Free two-hour parking will be available across all two-hour parking spaces in the CBD from 1 December to 1 January.

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Councillor Colleen Doyle said it was a way to get more people into the city and shopping at locally owned stores.

“This is just one way for Council to encourage locals and visitors to head into the CBD and make the most of the great facilities we have in our city centre,” Cr Doyle said.

“The free parking was taken up by plenty of people last year, which went a long way to helping activate the city centre.”

Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said there were plenty of unique shops in the Townsville CBD to buy Christmas gifts from.

“There are so many wonderful boutique stores and traders that offer something really different compared to big department stores,” Cr Greaney said.

“We want as many people as possible to take advantage of the free two-hour parking to support our city’s traders.”

The free parking is for 2P spaces only, not four-hour or eight-hour spots, and ticketing machines will be signed to reflect this.

Free parking will run from Sunday 1 December until Tuesday 31 December.

More than 500 2P spaces will be offered for free under the plan.

The two-hour time limit still applies and will be enforced.
