Children in Townsville have a new outlet for their energy with a new playground installed at Vincent’s Cambridge Park.

The Mountaineer playground, which is designed for children of all abilities to make playtime more accessible to local families, is now open for use.

Division eight representative, Councillor Maurie Soars, said the new playground was a great addition to Cambridge Park.

“Children not only get physical exercise from playing at the park, but also have their minds stimulated and have the chance to make new friendships,” Cr Soars said.

“The new Mountaineer playground that has been installed at Cambridge Park is designed to allow children of all abilities enjoy time at the park. It is important that all children are given the opportunity to play and learn.

“Having new equipment that encourages active play and allows for parents and carers to play alongside children is great.”

Cr Soars said the $320,000 project was funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland (W4Q) program and supported six jobs through contractor Urban Play, which undertook the installation.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Townsville City Council had received more than $69.6 million in funding under Works for Queensland to help deliver 96 projects, which had supported 1,358 local jobs.

“Additionally, the Council has just been allocated a further $13.54 million through the COVID Works for Queensland program to help support the community during these difficult times,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said the new playground was a welcome addition to the park.

“Cambridge Park is the green heart of the Vincent community where local families can come and have fun or just relax,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“This new playground is a wonderful addition to the park and one that will prove popular for kids of all abilities.”

Urban Play play consultant Wil Haberer said Cambridge Park boasted the first Mountaineer playground in Queensland, which would add value to the lives of many children in the area.

“It is great to see Townsville City Council providing such great playgrounds for their community,” Mr Haberer said.

“This playground will not only be a place filled with running, sliding, laughter and happy memories but the play equipment chosen is bursting with play value which will help to develop happy and healthy kids.”
