Locals flock to festive fun at Carols By Candlelight

Date published: 9 December 2022

Council’s Carols By Candlelight event was a tremendous success on Sunday with around 15,000 locals enjoying a stellar evening at Riverway Oval.

Crowds were entertained by Townsville’s top singers and dancers, with Council team member and classically trained singer Sophie Ricca wowing as the special guest.

Mayor Jenny Hill was among the thousands of people soaking in the Christmas spirit and enjoying the live music, food trucks as well as the special visit from Santa.

“Carols by Candlelight is one of our favourite festive events leading into Christmas and it was so good to see such a huge turnout this year,” Mayor Hill said.

“Seeing the crowd really getting into the carols and having a great time, with lots of kids running around, was just a perfect way to start the festive season.”

Council also made history on the night with Townsville residents helping break the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing antlers.

3,504 people at the event donned antlers and made their way into the record books, smashing the previous record of 1,731.

The holiday fun will continue at Riverway in the coming weeks, with Council-supported Stable at Riverway running from December 18-22, from 5:30pm each night.
