Get ready to give Supercars a Super Welcome this week

Townsville City Council is revving up its engines ahead of Thursday’s street party welcoming Supercars to the city for the NTI Townsville 500.

The Super Welcome event at Flinders St East will feature a race-ready Supercar, course cars on display, the Hot Wheels team, the Supercars SuperKids Zone, live music and food trucks.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the free event was sure to be a hit with fans who wanted to meet their favourite Supercars drivers.

“There will be an all-in signing session from 5pm to 5.45pm with the full line up of Supercars drivers, so this is a great chance to pick up a free Supercars poster and meet your favourite driver ahead of this weekend’s action,” Cr Hill said.

“This is the best way to kick off a full weekend of racing as Reid Park is taken over and turned into a world-class street circuit for the Townsville 500.

“Council is proud to support events like these which are in line with our commitment to delivering major cultural events in our city, helping to boost our reputation as the arts, sport and culture capital of Northern Australia.”

Cr Hill said the event would even be a hit for people who weren’t die hard racing fans.

“Thursday’s Super Welcome will include live music from Chris Baker and a line up of food trucks from Pop Up Food Trucks, so there is something for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“It’s always great to see Townsville get together to support major events that travel to our city and I’m sure the Super Welcome crowd will be another reflection of Townsville’s great community spirit.”

The Super Welcome starts at 4pm on Thursday at Flinders St East.
