Makeover in the works for Upper Ross road to improve safety

A section of a popular Upper Ross road is set to receive a $3 million makeover as Council crews move in to undertake significant works on Allambie Lane.

The works, which will involve widening the road, installation of a hard medium, installing dedicated turning lanes and a raised crossing will be jointly funded by both the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and Townsville City Council.

Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the project would increase safety for both road users and pedestrians in the area.

“Allambie Lane is quite a busy thoroughfare, with various schools, the PCYC, kindergartens, businesses and Riverway Plaza, so it’s great to be able to invest in the Upper Ross and enhance the safety for everyone in the area,” Cr Rehbein said.

“This is a substantial investment in road safety in the area, and we appreciate the Queensland Government supporting this project with $444,841 in funding through the TIDS.

“This crucial upgrade ensures the best traffic flow for all motorists by improving vehicle movements along Allambie Lane.

“Council is committed to improving the city’s road network right throughout our community.

“Partial lane closures and delays will be in place throughout the works, however Council will maintain access for affected residents and businesses to ensure they can continue trading with minimal interruptions.”

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the State worked collaboratively with local government to deliver infrastructure upgrades for Queenslanders.

“We know TIDS funding is vital for local governments like Townsville City Council to support their works programs and provide significant community benefits,” Mr Harper said.

“We are committed to supporting the delivery of road and transport infrastructure projects, such as the Allambie Lane works, that meet the needs of growing communities across Queensland, support jobs and boost local economies.

“Allambie Lane is a busy road in the area and the Upper Ross is continuing to grow so upgrades like this are important for the community.”

The Allambie Lane works are expected to be complete late this year, weather and conditions permitting.
