Pinnacles Gallery reopens with revamped exhibition

A new evolution of Australian Tapestry Workshop’s Leftover Love will usher in the new era of Pinnacles Gallery at its grand re-opening this Saturday.

Leftover Love – New Directions brings together contemporary textile artists whose works reflect on sustainability, environment and material culture.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Pinnacles Gallery was anticipating an influx of visitors as it reopened alongside the new Riverway Library this weekend.

“Pinnacles Gallery has been temporarily closed as part of the Riverway Library renovation project, so I’m thrilled to see it throw its doors open again for locals and visitors to enjoy such a high calibre of art for free,” Cr Greaney said.

“Combining a modern and innovative library with the Pinnacles Art Gallery, Riverway lagoons, sports facilities, boardwalks and open spaces means we have created a world-class arts, culture, recreation and activity precinct for local and visitors alike.

“Pinnacles Gallery is one of two nationally recognised galleries that Council owns and operates, with the other being Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in the Townsville city centre.”

Cr Greaney said Leftover Love – New Directions was the ideal first exhibition for Pinnacles Gallery.

“This exhibition has grown from an earlier Australian Tapestry Workshop show and explores sustainable practices. All media used in the exhibition has been reused, repurposed and remade into something new,” she said.

“This message of sustainability sits close to our hearts at Council, as we work with the community to move towards zero waste for our city.

“Both Pinnacles and this exhibition are a key part of our focus on developing an active visual arts scene and growing a sustainable city that embraces arts and culture.

“I’d highly recommend coming along to see Leftover Love – New Directions, which is free for the public to enjoy until June 18 this year.”

In the 12 months to the temporary closure of Pinnacles in May 2022, Townsville City Council’s galleries attracted more than 22,000 people through their doors and online as part of their programmed exhibitions and tours.

Pinnacles Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 3pm Saturday, and 10am to 1pm on Sunday. Entry is free.
