Council employees keep city running this Christmas

Date published: 24 December 2025

Townsville City Council’s operations will be kept running by a group of dedicated employees working in areas like customer service, waste, and animal care these holidays.

These quiet achievers will be working through the Christmas and New Year’s break to ensure essential services are maintained across Townsville.

Mayor Nick Dametto said these staff members were just some of the many unsung heroes who keep Townsville running while the rest of us are celebrating with family and friends.

“The services Council provides are the backbone of this city, many of which need to operate seamlessly 24/7. So, while the rest of us are tucking into Christmas lunch or tearing open presents at home, there’s a crew of Council workers pulling on their high vis and lacing up their work shoes to keep Townsville looking its best,” Cr Dametto said.

“Waste facilities are closed on Christmas day but our truck drivers collect bins 365 days a year, so if your bin collection day is on Christmas, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day please make sure your bins are on the kerb and spaced 50cm apart before 6am. Some collections on Magnetic Island may start a little later than usual because of changed ferry times, but don’t worry, the team will be on its way.

“Council’s customer service centre will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and from Monday December 29 to Friday January 2 inclusive. Remember, if it’s urgent you can call our 13 48 10 number.

“Council has a full list of operating hours available on our website, so jump online if you need to double-check when our facilities are open.”
