Riverside Green upgrades deliver new play options for local families

Townsville City Council has completed the latest stage of the Riverside Green District Park transformation at Douglas, officially opening a new playground designed especially for toddlers and younger children.

The works form part of the broader Riverside Green Open Space Renewal Project and delivered new play equipment, picnic tables, shade structures, and upgraded landscaping throughout the area. The main dog off‑leash zone has also received new shade structures, improving comfort for residents and their pets.

This completion follows the delivery of Stage 1 late last year, which introduced an older kids’ playground featuring slides, swings and a climbing obstacle course, alongside new barbecue and picnic facilities, drainage improvements, shade structures, and the relocation of the small dog off‑leash area.

Divisional Councillor Suzy Batkovic said the community’s enthusiastic use of the upgraded park over the past year shows how valuable refreshed public spaces were to local families.

“I’ve had excellent feedback from residents since the first stage opened, and it’s been fantastic to see the park so well‑used,” Cr Batkovic said.

“The older kids have really embraced the new equipment, and now our littlest residents have a dedicated space to explore and enjoy as well.

“This upgrade means Riverside Green now caters to a wider range of ages, making it easier for families to enjoy the park together. And with the dog park right alongside, even the four‑legged family members are included.

“I’ve been pleased to share the recent news that the State Government has funded a toilet facility for Riverside Green which will be installed in the New Year, meaning families will be able to stay and play for longer.

“Council is committed to activating public spaces and encouraging residents to get outside, be active and enjoy our city. The completed upgrades at Riverside Green add another high‑quality, family‑friendly space to our community.”

Council has invested a total of $1,795,000 into the renewal of the playground and park area at Riverside Green.
