TLDMG moves to alert as rain continues

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has moved to alert as rain continues across the region.

TLDMG Chair Andrew Robinson said the TLDMG was closely monitoring advice from the Bureau of Meteorology.

“The Bureau of Meteorology have released a Severe Weather Warning for the District with isolated heavy rainfall this evening and over the weekend,” Cr Robinson said.

“Following this advice we have made the decision to move the TLDMG to alert so we can continue to prepare the community should the weather get worse.

“There is no need to panic. What we need is for residents to go through their emergency plan with their households, have their emergency kit ready and be prepared to leave if it’s required during the coming days.

“If anyone in your household has a medical condition, make sure their medication is in your emergency kit. If you have infants, make sure they have enough formula, nappies and clothing for at least three days.

“Make sure you have a plan for your pets in case weather gets worse, including having food for your animals in your emergency kit and a safe place for your pets to go if you need to leave your home.

“Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it. Do not drive through flood waters. Do not put your life at risk.”

Cr Robinson said sand to fill sandbags would be available at eight locations for residents in low-lying areas to continue with their household preparedness.

“Sand is now available, but we are asking the community to please bring their own sandbags,” he said.
