Locals invited to help chart the future of Rowes Bay and Pallarenda

Date published: 28 October 2026

Residents can learn more about Townsville City Council’s efforts to improve the Rowes Bay to Pallarenda coastline at a community information session this Saturday 31 October, as Council seeks feedback on its draft Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP).

The session, being held from 10am at National Servicemen’s Memorial Park, Belgian Gardens, will give residents an opportunity to learn more about the draft plan, speak with project representatives and provide direct feedback.

Mayor Nick Dametto said the consultation was an important opportunity for the community to help shape how the coastline is managed into the future.

“The shoreline that connects Rowes Bay and Pallarenda is a beautiful part of Townsville that means different things to different people, whether it's a place to walk, fish, exercise, enjoy nature or spend time with friends and family,” Cr Dametto said.

“We know local residents and foreshore users have a strong connection to this stretch of coastline, so it's important they have the chance to review the draft plan and tell us what they think.

“The information session is a great opportunity for people to ask questions, learn more about the proposed approach and share their local knowledge before the plan is finalised.”

The draft SEMP outlines a long-term approach to managing shoreline erosion and coastal change along the Rowes Bay to Pallarenda foreshore over the next 20 years.

The review is the first major update since the plan was adopted in 2010 and has been informed by technical investigations undertaken by specialist consultancy Water Technology, along with community feedback received during Round 1 consultation in 2025.

To date, the review has examined shoreline erosion and accretion trends, coastal and climate influences, planning requirements and the effectiveness of erosion management measures implemented over the past 15 years.

Round 2 consultation is open until 9 November 2026, and feedback can be provided via Council's Have Your Say website or in person at the community information session.
