Nominations are now open for the 2016 Australia Day Awards which celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals or groups who inspire us through their accomplishments in service to the community, culture and sports in Townsville.

There are nine categories in the 2016 awards:

  •  Citizen of the Year
  •  Young Citizen of the Year
  •  Community Event of the Year
  •  Cultural Award
  •  Spirit of Townsville Award
  •  Sports Administrator Award
  •  Senior Sports Person of the Year
  •  Junior Sports Person of the Year
  •  Environmental Excellence and Sustainability

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill encouraged residents to nominate a person or group they believed deserved recognition for their contribution and selfless efforts.

"We all know someone who goes above and beyond to assist a charity or sporting group, or someone who has excelled in their chosen field," Cr Hill said.

"Townsville City Council provides an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate these contributions of those in our community.

"You can nominate a friend, community leader, work colleague or even community organisations."

Australia Day Award nominations close at 5pm on January 8, 2016.

All award nominees and their families will be invited to attend the Australia Day ceremony to be held at Jezzine Barracks on Tuesday, January 26.
