Council flying the Townsville Fire flag for finals

Council is throwing its support behind the Townsville Fire’s finals push as the team chases a fourth Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) title.
The Fire rode an incredible 12-game winning streak to seal top spot on the ladder and will face off against the Perth Lynx in a three-game semi-final series, starting with game one at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre this Thursday night.
Council is giving the club’s #PaintTheTownOrange campaign a massive boost by flying a giant Townsville Fire flag at the University Road/Angus Smith Drive roundabout, lighting up several city assets in the Fire’s colours, dressing the city with Fire flags and changing Council’s logo on social media to orange.
Mayor Jenny Hill was among the 2900 strong crowd for the Fire’s most recent home game and said she was excited to watch these wonderful women battle to bring home another championship for the city.
“Council is right behind the Townsville Fire and I can’t wait to be among a massive crowd on Thursday night at ‘The Fire Pit’,” Cr Hill said.
“All of these women are such wonderful ambassadors for our city and role models to young people right across the region.
“We are showing our support for the team with a number of different initiatives, and we want them to know the entire community is behind them and cheering them on.”
Council are long-time partners and sponsors of the club, with WNBL legend and three-time championship winner with the Fire Suzy Batkovic currently serving as Councillor for Division Six.
Cr Batkovic called on Townsville to throw their support behind the Fire’s push for the championship by getting along to the game on Thursday night.
“I loved nothing more than playing in front of a rocking home crowd in Townsville during my playing days and I can’t wait to be there on Thursday night,” Cr Batkovic said.
“As a councillor it’s great to see Council really rally behind the Fire and support them heading into this finals campaign.”
