New Fire flag ready for finals push

The Townsville Fire are setting their sights on a sixth WNBL Championship with a new flag ready to be hoisted at Council’s University Road roundabout flagpole.
Natalie Marr MP, Member for Thuringowa, donated the flag ahead of the season in honour of current WNBL champions and local heroes.
“The Townsville Fire are one of the most successful sporting franchises in the country, and absolutely number one in northern Australia, so it is time for a fresh flag with the new logo ahead of the 2026/27 season,” Ms Marr said.
“These championship players are not only amazing on court, but tireless ambassadors for their sport and are really loved by the community.
“They make a massive contribution, whether it be through clinics, coaching, outreach or school programs. It’s a privilege to be able to give back to the club.”
Deputy Mayor and Division 6 Councillor Suzy Batkovic said it was great to work with Member for Thuringowa Natalie Marr to secure a new Townsville Fire flag for the University Road roundabout flagpole.
“The Australian flag is usually flown at the University Road roundabout, and our Council crews take great pride in raising and lowering it. I want to thank them for the care and respect they show. During finals, we’ll fly the Townsville Fire flag there to show our support for the team.
“After many years and five championship wins, the old Fire flag was looking a little worn and still featured the team’s previous logo. I spoke with Natalie about replacing it with a flag featuring the Fire’s updated logo, and I want to thank her for her support in making it happen.
“We’re proud to back our Fire girls. They do a fantastic job on and off the court, and their work with local schools and community programs makes them great role models for young people across Townsville. We’re hoping to see the new Fire flag flying high come finals time.”
Townsville Fire CEO Samantha Pascoe said the support the team received from the community was unique within the WNBL.
“No other club, in any other city, gets the same kind of support that the girls do here, and it’s going to be great seeing the new branding on display on University Road,” Ms Pascoe said.
“We really appreciate Member for Thuringowa Natalie Marr MP for donating the flag, and also Townsville City Council for providing the location and the crews to put it up and down.”
The Fire play their first home game of the season this Sunday (25 October) at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre against the Sydney Flames at 2pm.
