Evans Street Bridge gets major upgrades

Townsville City Council will be conducting major upgrades to the Evans Street Bridge from Monday 30 April.

Local company NQ Excavations have been contracted to undertake the construction work, which is expected to take between 6 and 8 weeks to complete.

The project will support up to 12 jobs on site at any one time through NQ Excavations and its subcontractors.

The works will include a complete renewal of the bridge surface and walkways, installation of new handrails and maintenance to the support system.

An alternate access to the cemetery – off Old Common Road – has already been completed.

Infrastructure Committee Chairman Cr Molachino said Council was committed to creating local jobs by awarding work to local companies.

“Construction projects such as this bridge upgrade help support the Townsville economy and local jobs,” Cr Molachino said.

“It’s important Council partner with local businesses to build the infrastructure our community deserves.”

Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said residents had requested an upgrade to the bridge.

“This project will really improve access to the bridge with a new surface, walkway and handrails – it will be more convenient for residents to use and better suited for regular traffic,” Cr Greaney said.

“The Evans Street Bridge is the main entrance to the Belgian Garden Cemetery and while we undergo the works the community will be able to use an entrance on Old Common Road.”
