Townsville residents are being encouraged to Get Active and kickstart 2020 with a new sport or activity.
Townsville City Council’s Get Active Expo will have plenty of options for people of all ages to find out about or register for a local sport of activity at Townsville Stadium on Sunday, 12 January from 9am to 2pm.
Councillor Maurie Soars said the Expo was a great way to discover and get started with a new sport or hobby.
“Studies show physical inactivity is costing $13.8 billion to the national economy and Townsville is keen to make a difference,” Cr Soars said.
“The new year is always a great time to support people in making a change by providing easy and fun ways to get active and this expo gives people a great chance to assess their options.
“There will be more than 100 active exhibitors at the Get Active Expo so it will be a fantastic way to get a taste of a new sport or activity.
“People are being invited to come and try a wide range of sports and there will be plenty of activities to get children moving on their school holidays.”
Cr Soars said this year’s Expo would also include the official launch of the North Queensland Games.
“The Games come back to Townsville this year and the Expo will give us a chance to highlight associations that are hosting events during the games from 10 – 13 April,” Cr Soars said.
“Like the Get Active Expo, the Games will give clubs a chance to showcase their sports.
“More than 3,600 athletes from more than 45 sports will compete at the NQ Games so it is great for the local economy.”
Cr Soars said the Get Active Expo was an opportunity for clubs to welcome fresh faces.
“The Expo gives sports a chance to reach out to a new audience – it gives them access to people outside their regular participants and supporters,” Cr Soars said.
“People who are curious about a certain sport or activity can talk to the exhibitors to get a better understanding of their options.
“Some sporting clubs will use the event as their sign-on day so there are plenty of reasons to head to Townville Stadium on Sunday.”
The Expo will also include 3 healthy eating workshops and screenings of Nature Play Queensland’s Neighbourhood Play Project documentary.
Meet local active heroes and go into the draw to pick up prizes including a signed North Queensland Cowboys jersey, one of 10 Get Active and Healthy Packs, or two six-month gym memberships.
