Council committed to city’s water network

Date published: 10 May 2023

Council will construct a new water main pipe under the existing footpath along Dean Street between Palmer Street and Morey Street.

The Dean Street water main project is scheduled to start today (Wednesday 10 May) and will take four months to complete (weather and project conditions permitting).

Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said Council had appointed NQ Pipe and Civil Pty Ltd to conduct these works, as part of Council’s commitment to continuing its provision of safe and clean drinking water to Townsville residents.

“As the existing water main is nearing the end of its useful life, these works are required to ensure all properties, commercial and industrial businesses within the South Townsville area and Townsville Stadium continue to receive an efficient water service,” Cr Cook said.

“As part of these works, Council will maintain water supply to the residential and commercial properties along the water main route during construction activities. Traffic and pedestrian access along Dean, Palmer and Morey Streets will also be maintained.

“Townsville City Council is committed to providing and maintaining over $5.4B worth of community assets consisting of water and wastewater networks, bridges, drainage, roads, waste management, community facilities, sporting venues and more throughout our city.”

Traffic and pedestrian access along Dean Street, Palmer Street and Morey Street will remain, however minor delays may be experienced.

On completion of the water main installation, and with the support of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, works will continue with the construction of a new pathway to complete this important renewal project.

Works may involve:

  • Excavation and machinery operations
  • Closure of the footpath and some on-street parking bays
  • Traffic management including traffic control and temporary road closures
  • Safety fencing installed for pedestrian and vehicles
  • Noise, flashing lights, ground vibrations and dust
