Stay informed as tropical low approaches coast
Date published: 5 March 2026
Townsville can expect strong winds and heavy rain from tomorrow and into the weekend if Tropical Low 29U crosses the coast north of Townsville tomorrow.
The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has moved to alert and is continuing to monitor the system in the Coral Sea as it approaches the coast.
TLDMG Chair Nick Dametto said there was still some uncertainty about the system’s path and it was important for residents to stay informed through official channels.
“The TLDMG has been monitoring the weather system and we will continue to do so as the system approaches and crosses the coast. At this stage we’re expecting it to cross the coast as a tropical low just north of Townsville tomorrow,” Cr Dametto said.
“What we’re expecting during the coming days is for heavy rainfall and strong winds. Heavy rainfall can result in water over some roads – remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.
“We need residents to be informed and be ready to act if the system changes during the coming hours and days, so make sure you have your emergency plan for your entire household ready and make sure your emergency kit is stocked up. The TLDMG will update the community if conditions change or worsen.
“If you’re travelling north of Townsville today or in the coming days, please check local road conditions before you head out.
“It’s important for all residents to stay informed, so visit the Townsville Disaster Dashboard, follow the Townsville Disaster Information Facebook page and listen to local radio for the latest updates.”
