Community grant offers a chance to preserve the past

Date published: 30 August 2016

Townsville City Council is urging community organisations with a focus on preserving their cultural history to apply for funding to support their endeavours.

Council’s Community Capacity Building Grants Program – Community Cultural Awareness offers funding from $1,000 to $5,000 and aims to recognise and support Townsville’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, South Sea Islander people and culturally or linguistically diverse people to share and pass down their culture to future generations.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the grant was an opportunity for council to support community-led action to gather and document and pass down cultural history.

“It’s vitally important for us as a community to preserve the past, the history and the culture of the people and the region for future generations to learn from and to enjoy,” Cr Doyle said.

“I encourage organisations to step forward and apply for funding, in the hope that we can keep a record of our history for many, many years to come.”
