Planning Committee saddled up for new rodeo

A new rodeo ground at Hervey Range has been recommended for approval with the potential to diversify into the future.

Council’s Planning and Development Committee today voted to approve an application for a Material Change of Use over rural land at Lot 1/1994 Hervey Range Road, Hervey Range for a rodeo arena.

North Queensland Elite Rodeo plans to build on the success of its inaugural rodeo, held in August last year, to two or three events each year.

Committee chairman Cr Les Walker said the proposal, incorporating arena, holding yards, viewing mound and car parking, had great potential as a tourism attraction for the region.

“The establishment of a rodeo ground in this location demonstrates great initiative on behalf of the landowner,” Cr Walker said.

“Last year’s inaugural event was able to attract some 400 spectators with rodeo stars Brendon Clark and Ty Pozzobon headlining the cowboys.”

Councillors today heard the proponents had gone ahead with the development as the Rural zoning of the property would ordinarily render a development of this type code assessable. However an impact assessment had been necessary due to the inclusion of outdoor lighting.

“Our officers have investigated and have been able to reasonably condition all concerns related to the lighting as the location of the grounds and associated car parking is well away from residential dwellings.

“We’ve also be able to condition potential impacts surrounding traffic, noise and parking to ensure events are able to be run smoothly,” Cr Walker said.

Council received one submission during the public notification period.

Today’s committee recommendation to approve the application will go to the full council meeting on February 28.
