Townsville’s recovery well underway

Work is already underway to ensure Townsville’s recovery from the worst floods on record is coordinated and delivers the best results for flood-affected residents and businesses.

The Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group (TLRRG) has been ramping up recovery efforts while the Townsville Disaster Management Group responded to the unfolding event.

The focus of the TLRRG includes immediate cleaning and repairs – including roads, sewers and water pipes – while responding to any health and safety risks.

The group will also look at providing support for small businesses, long-term economic planning for the city, and lobbying for major job-creating projects.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Cr Walker said the Group’s recovery effort includes a strong emphasis on residents’ social and mental wellbeing.

“Our main priorities include ensuring all residents have the support they need whether this is mental or physical, or help accessing things like emergency housing and financial assistance.

“We are urging residents to visit the Department of Communities recovery hubs for help in accessing financial help, emergency assistance, counsellors and more.”

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mayor Jenny Hill said the road to recovery would be difficult, but the community is up to the challenge.

“Our entire community is facing the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives,” Cr Hill said.

“I want to assure residents that we have been working on plans that will help the city bounce back even stronger.

“This unprecedented flood has shown that our community is incredibly resilient and always willing to support one another – it shows that we are all a part of Team Townsville.”
