Residents to get disaster ready this Sunday

Disaster Ready Day is just around the corner and Townsville City Council is asking all residents to ask the question – am I disaster ready?
Disaster Ready Day will be held on Sunday 3 November at Jezzine Barracks and will have a number of stalls and organisations available to help educate and support residents looking to prepare for the upcoming wet season.
Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) Chair Mayor Jenny Hill said Disaster Ready Day was a staple event for the community.
“In previous years, this event was named Cyclone Sunday, as it coincided with the beginning of the cyclone season,” Cr Hill said.
“Following the unprecedented monsoon earlier in the year and the IGEM review, Council changed the name and focus to make sure the community is prepared in case of any type of natural disaster.
“I would like to encourage all residents to come along on the day and take advantage of all our stall holders and organisations that have come together to provide advice and assistance to residents.”
Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Cr Les Walker said preparation for the wet season was vital for a community still recovering from a natural disaster.
“We are a community that is still coping with the aftermath of the unprecedented monsoon,” Cr Walker said.
“It is important that we provide the support and advice we can give to make sure our residents are prepared in case of any emergency of the coming months.”
Disaster Ready Day attendees will:
- Find out how to fill sandbags
- Have the chance speak to emergency services representatives
- See JCU Cyclone Testing Station demonstrations of the effects of wind-driven rain on households
- Get their important documents scanned
- Find out their storm tide zone and much more.
