The countdown to 2021 is on!

Get ready to count down the last minutes of 2020 and welcome in 2021 with Townsville City Council’s New Year’s Eve celebrations at Riverway Stadium and The Strand tomorrow night (31 December).

A family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration including fireworks will kick off at 5pm at Riverway Stadium, and midnight fireworks will light up the waterfront at The Strand at midnight.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said everyone deserved to enjoy the start of 2021 after a tumultuous year.

“We’ve made it through one of the most unprecedented years in living memory, and we’ve done it well here in Townsville. Now it’s time to celebrate a fresh start with the new year,” Cr Greaney said.

“It’s essential that we all do our part to be COVID-safe at these New Year’s Eve events. Make sure you continue to social distance, and if you’re feeling sick stay home.

“We’ve done a great job in Townsville to minimise the effects of COVID, so let’s keep that up as we usher in the new year.”

Cr Greaney said kids could enjoy a movie screening at the Riverway Stadium event.

“The New Year’s Eve event at Riverway Stadium will kick off at 5pm, with food trucks and a screening of Sgt. Stubby: An Unlikely Hero at 6.15pm. The fireworks display will start at 8pm,” she said.

“If you’re a night owl and want to ring in 2021 with a countdown, head to The Strand for the midnight fireworks show.”
