North Shore Boulevard Update

Date published: 2 July 2020

Townsville City Council engineers have completed an initial inspection of the bridge over Stony Creek, which forms part of North Shore Boulevard, which was damaged overnight when a vehicle was set alight under it.

The heat from the fire was hot enough to spall the concrete cover on at least four bridge deck units, which has exposed the high tensile, prestressed wires in those deck units.

Council has engaged an external engineering company with specialist capabilities in fire engineering to undertake further assessments and advise on what repairs are required.

Council’s priority is to ensure the bridge is safe for traffic before it can re-open. At this stage, the bridge is unlikely to be re-opened this week. Diversions will remain in-place and further information will be made available as it become available.

Council thanks the community for its patience in this matter.
