The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) is supporting the Townsville Hospital and Health Service to open two additional COVID-19 testing sites.

A testing site opened at the Reid Park pit complex around 1pm today (30 September) and will be operated by Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. It will operate until 5pm today and from 8am-4pm tomorrow.

A second testing site will be open in carpark three at James Cook University from 8am-4pm tomorrow (Friday, 1 October) and will be operated by QML Pathology.

These locations are in addition to the testing site at the 1300 Smiles Stadium, which has been upscaled to prepare for an increase in demand for testing for the community.

Members of the public wanting to be tested must bring their Medicare card with them.

TLDMG chairperson Jenny Hill said it was important that Townsville residents got tested.

“The Townsville community has come together to stop the spread of COVID before, and we can do it again,” Cr Hill said.

“It is vital that as many people as possible as tested so we can identify any local transmission as quickly as possible.

“I know the implementation of stage 2 restrictions in Townsville is annoying, but if it helps stop the spread of COVID and avoid harsher lockdowns, then it is worth it.

“The best defence against further restrictions and potential lockdowns is to get vaccinated and I urge all Townsville residents who haven’t been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible.”
