Residential lot approval surge shows confidence in Townsville

Date published: 22 February 2023

Townsville is experiencing a residential lot approval surge with the last financial quarter racking up the second highest quarter of residential lot approval results in the past four years.

The data was presented to Council at today’s Ordinary Council meeting as part of the 2022/23 Q2 Development Activity Report.

Jensen has led the way with 81 lots approved for release across its Eden Park and The Orchard developments, followed by 39 approvals for Julago’s Elliot Springs estate and 38 approvals for Bohle Plains’ Harris Crossing, with a total of 312 residential lots approved for release across Townsville.

The availability of these lots to the housing market allows the largest city in North Queensland to respond to growing demand.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the data showed strong growth in the residential development sector post-Covid.

“The last time we saw comparable figures was during the 2020/21 financial year, which was during the height of the Covid-19 Federal Government stimulus package,” Cr Hill said.

“These strong residential lot approval figures show Council is continuing to grow Townsville into a vibrant city centred around inclusive connected neighbourhood through increasing the city’s population density within the existing urban footprint.”

The report also highlighted quarter two’s 44 commercial building approvals, bringing the rolling 2022/23 financial year average to 53 approvals per quarter.

“Council is working to activate Townsville through its City Activation and Jobs Growth Policy, helping to attract jobs and businesses to the city,” Cr Hill said.

“Recording an average of 53 commercial building approvals per quarter shows continued confidence in investment in Townsville.”
