New exhibitions shine a spotlight on North Queensland artists

Date published: 6 November 2026

Experience the depth and diversity of North Queensland’s arts community through three new exhibitions now on show at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.

From nationally significant works to emerging artists and young Indigenous printmakers, the exhibitions showcase the stories, talent and creative voices shaping the region.

Running now through to mid-January, the exhibitions include In the Heart of the North Part 3: The Douglas Kagi Gift – showcasing artworks from the City of Townsville Art Collection – as well as Young Indigenous Printmakers and Transitions, both supported by Townsville City Galleries and Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts.

Division 9 Councillor Liam Mooney said the three exhibitions highlighted the strength of the City’s cultural collection and its commitment to supporting the next generation of artists.

“Together these exhibitions celebrate the creativity, talent and diverse stories that make North Queensland’s arts community so rich and vibrant,” Cr Mooney said.

“They showcase significant works from our City Collection while also creating opportunities for emerging artists and young people to develop their skills, share their perspectives and see their work displayed in a professional gallery setting.

“These exhibitions are a wonderful reminder that art helps us connect with our community, culture and identity, and I encourage everyone to visit Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and experience them firsthand.”

In the Heart of the North Part 3: The Douglas Kagi Gift explores the lasting impact of the 2014 Douglas Kagi Gift, a generous donation of 467 artworks to the City of Townsville Art Collection.

The exhibition features selected works that demonstrate the breadth and significance of the gift, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience artworks by nationally and internationally recognised artists while celebrating the enduring legacy of one of the collection’s most important donations.

Young Indigenous Printmakers, delivered in partnership with Umbrella, showcases works created by First Nations senior students who participated in a free outreach program exploring lino carving, printmaking and cultural identity.

Also delivered in partnership with Umbrella, Transitions is a mentorship-driven exhibition showcasing the creative development of five emerging visual artists and arts writers from the Townsville region as they take important steps towards professional arts practice.
