Pinnacles Gallery exhibition gets virtual tour treatment

Date published: 3 February 2022

Experience Groundswell: Recent Movements Within Art and Territory at Pinnacles Gallery or from the comfort of your own home by taking a digital tour through the exhibition from next week.

Groundswell features more than 20 works by Northern Territory artists and explores their connections to country and their perspectives on home.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Council wanted to make Groundswell as accessible as possible for the public.

“Since COVID came into our lives two years ago, we have been looking at new ways to deliver exhibitions and the most popular method by far is through digital tours,” Cr Greaney said.

The Percivals 2020 digital tour had more than 4,000 viewers in the first fortnight it was open, and we’re hoping for a similar reception for Groundswell.

“The digital tour lets you move around the Pinnacles Gallery space and see the art as it’s presented – that way if you’re unwell, immunocompromised, out of town, or just want an alternative way to view the exhibition, you’ll still be able to see it in its intended layout.”

Cr Greaney said Groundswell carried many powerful themes that North Queenslanders would be able to identify with.

“Territorians and North Queenslanders all have one thing in common: we’re all Northern Australians. That makes for a unique connection to our environment, from knowing how it feels to prepare for the wet season to the challenges of sharing our swimming spots with salties,” Cr Greaney said.

“This exhibition delves into each artist’s concerns about water sustainability and its impact on our future. Townsville is a dry tropics city and we understand how important water security is, making this the perfect exhibition to travel to Pinnacles Gallery.”

Groundswell: Recent Movements Within Art and Territory is open at Pinnacles Gallery until 23 April 2022. Entry is free.
