Townsville families invited to uncover their history

Townsvillians are invited to uncover their family stories, explore their heritage and preserve treasured memories as Townsville Citylibraries celebrates Family History Month this August.
Throughout the month, Citylibraries will showcase the free family history resources available through a library membership, including access to Ancestry.com, FindMyPast, the Local History Collection and specialist research support available at Citylibraries Flinders Street.
Townsville Deputy Mayor Suzy Batkovic said Family History Month was a great opportunity for residents to connect with their past and learn more about the stories that shaped their families and futures.
“Every family has a story to tell, and Family History Month encourages people to discover where they come from and preserve those stories for future generations,” Cr Batkovic said.
“Whether you’re just starting out digging into your family tree or continuing to build on what you already know, Citylibraries offers free access to valuable resources and expert support to help uncover family connections and stories from the past.”
Citylibraries Local History Librarian Chris To said researching family history was easier than many people realised.
“Family history research is like putting together a puzzle, with each record, photograph or document revealing another piece of your story,” Mr To said.
“People are often surprised by what they discover, and our resources and workshops are designed to help them get started with confidence.
“At our city branch, we also have dedicated local history staff on hand to help people undertake family research, provide Local History Collection tours and guidance as well as inductions to our free digitisation equipment and family history research computer service.”
To help residents begin or continue their family history journeys, Citylibraries will host two free workshops at the Flinders Street branch.
Family History 101, held on Monday 3 August 2026, will introduce participants to the basics of family history research, including where to start, useful techniques and key research tools.
Digitising Your Family Treasures, held on Monday 17 August 2026, will provide practical tips on scanning and preserving photographs and documents using Citylibraries equipment, helping ensure family memories can be shared for generations to come.
